Pet First Aid Basics

Not a substitute for veterinary care — when in doubt, call your vet or an emergency animal hospital right away.

• Know the signs of an emergency: difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, collapse, repeated vomiting/diarrhea, suspected poisoning, or a bloated/distended abdomen all warrant an immediate vet call.
• Keep a pet first aid kit on hand: gauze, self-adhering vet wrap, blunt-tip scissors, tweezers, saline solution, a muzzle (even friendly pets may bite when in pain), and your vet's phone number written down, not just saved digitally.
• ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 — a consultation fee may apply, but it's staffed 24/7 by veterinary toxicologists.
• Heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy in warm weather are early signs — move to shade/AC, offer water, and call your vet. Never leave a pet in a parked car, even briefly.
• Minor cuts or limping: gently clean with saline, keep them calm and off the affected area, and call your vet if it doesn't improve within a day or seems painful.

Seasonal Checks

• Spring: flea/tick prevention restart, check for foxtails and burrs on walks, watch for seasonal allergies (itching, paw licking).
• Summer: hot pavement can burn paw pads — the 7-second hand test (hold your palm on the pavement; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them) is a good rule of thumb. Extra water on walks, shade breaks, and heatstroke awareness matter most this season.
• Fall: check antifreeze isn't accessible in garages (it's toxic and smells sweet to pets), watch for mushrooms after rain on walks, and start transitioning to any cold-weather gear early.
• Winter: paw balm or booties for ice/salt on sidewalks, wipe paws after walks to remove de-icing chemicals, and shorten outdoor time in extreme cold — watch for shivering or reluctance to walk as signs it's too cold.
